The largest contiguous mountain area of the UK outside of the Scottish Highlands, the Carneddau is vast, remote and stunning. Ascend its flanks and you are greeted with a near untouched wilderness high above the hustle and bustle in the valleys below. Favoured by those seeking little to no contact with fellow walkers, the central Carneddau, even on a busy day, can feel lonely and forlorn.

Home to 7 of the Welsh 3000s and the challenge’s traditional finish at Foel-fras, the range is also home to the UK’s only population of wild horses roaming free. While largely untouched, the eagle-eyed can spot signs of human activity in the valleys leading up to the high plateau, including a number of reservoirs such as the Dulyn Reservoir and its famous Bothy.
