Known also as “Electric Mountain”, today Elidir Fawr houses one of the largest pumped storage power plants in the world and the second largest in Europe. Even before its hydro-electric days, Elidir Fawr broke records, playing host to the Dinorwic Slate Mine, Wales’ (and therefore the world’s) second largest. Second only to the Penrhyn Quarry on the opposite side of the range Elidir Fawr calls home.

Today, the rich industrial heritage that has taken place on and in Elidir Fawr is clearly visible to visitors. The former quarry now houses the national slate museum and the quarry pits are a haven for extreme climbers. The peak forms part of the Welsh 3000s along with its parent peak Y Garn and its wider neighbours in the Glyderau Range.
